You definitely have to be self-disciplined to run a small business. You're always going to face adversity, just like you did in any arena. Being able to meet that adversity and stare it in the face and overcome is something more-- you get a lot of satisfaction from doing that.

It's about having goals, and our goal was to have the team under 10 points. If we didn't-- I mean, sometimes we didn't. Then it's OK. And guess what? With the next quarter, we need to make up for that. That's exactly what I do as a State Farm agent. We get our goals for the year, and then we break them down into quarters and make sure that we stay on track.

The great thing about being a State Farm agent-- a small business owner, is you get to be a coach and a player. I still love doing the player day-to-day activities. I still love sales, but then I get to dictate and exactly align my business where I want it to go. And I love that part of it.

When I was a college coach out recruiting, a lot of the time when somebody walked in with a Notre Dame shirt on, or Texas, or USC, they immediately commanded respect. And I feel like with State Farm, when I put that State Farm shirt on, that's what I have. We're the biggest, we're the best.

I think the recognition comes with the high performance. At the end of the day, it's seeing the customer leave here happy, and that I felt like I actually helped them and educated them. To me, that's all the recognition I need.
