Towing a car after accident and making a claim

Auto claims questions and answers

You've been in an auto accident and filed your claim. What happens next and what questions might you run into after filing an auto claim? Janet Ruiz with the Insurance Information Institute offers some insight into what to expect with your auto claims questions.

What's a common mistake people make after making a claim?

Not keeping a log. That includes, of course, post-accident must-dos but it also means taking notes every time you speak with your agent or adjuster. If you need to ask questions later, you'll have the correct information in front of you. One other thing: If you have injuries, the adjuster may ask what seem to be personal questions, but that's part of the process.

What if I am feeling pain days after the accident?

Determine if you need to seek medical attention. Document your symptoms and contact your claims representative as there may be coverage available for medical treatment depending on the coverages you carry.

State Farm® has a list of recommended repair shops through their Select Service® Program, but I already have an auto body garage I like. What should I do?

You may choose any shop you want for repairs. However, the Select Service Program is designed to offer vehicle owners additional levels of service. By establishing agreements with collision repairers that offer quality workmanship, guaranteed completion dates, limited lifetime warranties on completed repairs, and pick-up and delivery service, we expect vehicle owners will have a positive experience with the repair process.

Another option for customers is to use the Pocket Estimate mobile app to submit photos of the damage on eligible claims.

Do I need to keep receipts?

Absolutely; keep everything no matter if it ends up being part of the claim or not.

My advice is always to work with your insurance company first; they can provide resources to make the process easier. They're there to answer your questions and help get you back on the road.
